Meet Lily
Unusually for The Stables at Mill Green, we had a lovely horse for sale. 16 year old Lily was passed to a dealer when her former owners no longer wanted her, and he left her where she was but with no provision for caring for her. Then, wanting his money back, he booked her into an unwarranted sale. To save this lovely quality schoolmistress we had to buy her, and this is when we got her home in late May.

Underweight, scruffy, worried and unsettled, we began the process of getting her weight right and allowing her to learn that she didn't need to defend herself from us. Five weeks later and she is showing the quality she possesses - TB mare who knows her job but needs a certain level of experience to handle and ride. Still needing to build muscle and condition but doing really well.

There is nothing wrong with her but she is forward going as is to be expected from a thoroughbred mare - she hacks out happily on her own with no traffic worries that we have found so far, schools well and jumps we are told. Only an experienced, sympathetic and permanent home will be considered - she has had enough problem owners!! Note she is NOT a loan mare because the money she cost is money we need to recoup to help other horses in our care. Her price reflects no more than her cost - the longer she stays the more we have had to invest in her, but she will be such a lovely mare when she has a bit more condition and muscle.

What a shame if she had gone to that sale and ended up who knows where!
From her loan with a view to buy Lily has been a huge hit and now has a new owner. To stop her getting into that downward spiral again though, there is a covenant to offer her back if her current owner can no longer keep her.
And look at her now! At a fun ride with her new owner in May 2010, almost a year to the day that she came in to Mill Green in such a state, what a lovely mare she is (and always was).

HARRY
And also now Harry - not a rescue but in need of a loan home, as his owner lives abroad. Harry is a shire cross, a big chap who can carry weight, and although he is a veteran, he enjoys working, and, although he is well mannered and safe, he is well up for any kind of fun!
Harry now has a forever home, and is a huge hit with his loaner and her family and friends. His follow up homecheck showed him to be gleaming with health and as happy as any horse can be. Live long and prosper Harry!
Whether any of these horses are what you are looking for, or something completely different - get in touch. Owners are frequently asking whether we know of a home for a horse at risk, and we may know of a horse in need who might suit you.
